2. Russia and China have vetoed a UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution that aimed to impose sanctions on Syria over chemical weapons use. The resolution was drafted by Britain, France and United States.

3. Reliance Jio has announced collaboration with networking giant Cisco to build world’s largest All-IP Digital Services Platform.

4. Senior IAS officer Sumit Mullick was appointed as the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra.

5. Internationally acclaimed author Neil Gaiman was appointed as a global goodwill ambassador of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), UN Refugee Agency.

9. The Union Government has asked all banks to provide mobile banking facility to all customers by March 31, 2017. This is part of the government’s efforts to boost the digital payment system.

20. Pakistan Government has approved merger of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) with the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

25. The Union Human Resource Development Ministry has issued a notification making mandatory for students to have an Aadhaar card to get served cooked meal under the Mid-Day Meal (MDM) Scheme.

27. Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir have signed a Secretary level fresh pact for the fast-track completion of the much-delayed 206 megawatt (MW) Shahpur Kandi dam project on the Ravi river. It is located 11 km downstream Ranjit Sagar Dam. Shapur Kandi project was declared a national project in February 2008 by the Centre.

31. India’s tallest national flag measuring 360 feet was hoisted at Attari-Wagah joint checkpost in Punjab. It broke earlier record of national flag hoisted in Ranchi which is 293 feet high.

32. Iran’s advanced S-300 air defence system became operational. The system was delivered by Russia following Iran’s July 2015 nuclear deal with P5+1 nations.

33. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has captured an image of an incredibly massive galaxy dubbed as UGC 12591 that is 400 million light years away from the Earth.

34. Former President of Haiti Rene Preval passed away. He was 74. He was an agronomist and champion of the poor.

35. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed P K Purwar as Chairman and Managing Director of state-run telecom major Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL).

36. Former IFS and MP Syed Shahabuddin passed away at the age of 82 after suffering from prolonged illness.

37. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved the Revised Cost Estimate-I of 400 MW Koteshwar Hydro Electric Project (HEP) in Uttarakhand at an estimated completion cost of Rs. 2,717.35 crore.

38. Special Commemorative Postage Stamp marking 100 years of Yogoda Satsang Math was released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a function in New Delhi. Yogoda Satsang Society of India was founded by Paramahansa Yogananda in 1917.

39. Social networking giant Facebook launched SheLeadsTech programme to nurture and mentor start-ups founded or co-founded by women. This programme will give start-ups founded/cofounded by women access to a year-long program that provides tools, mentorship and resources.

40. The Union Finance Ministry has given its in-principle approvals to public sector banks (PSBs) to offer Employee Stock Option plans (ESOPs) to their employees from FY 2017-18.
