14TH President Of India- Ram Nath Kovind

Ram Nath Kovind, lawyer, former MP and governor, was elected India's next President on Thursday. The government-backed candidate, a Dalit leader, won nearly 66 per cent of the votes cast by an electoral college of MPs and state lawmakers on Monday. He will be sworn in on July 25.

Facts About Ram Nath Kovind

1. Kovind was born in Kanpur Dehat, Uttar Pradesh. His father was a farmer.He holds a Bachelors degree in commerce and a LLB from DAV College, (affiliated with Kanpur University).

2. He was elected and became a Rajya Sabha MP from the state of Uttar Pradesh in April 1994. He served a total of twelve years, two consecutive terms, until March 2006.

3. Mr Kovind will be the second Dalit President of India after KR Narayanan.

4. Kovind has served as member on several important Parliamentary Committees. They include: Parliamentary Committee on Welfare of Scheduled Castes/Tribes, Parliamentary Committee on Home Affairs, Parliamentary Committee on Petroleum and Natural Gas, Parliamentary Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment, Parliamentary Committee on Law and Justice. He also chaired the Rajya Sabha House Committee

5. On August 8, 2015, Kovind was appointed governor of Bihar.
