1. Sania seals historic world no. 1 rank with Charleston title
Sania Mirza  created history by becoming the first female tennis player from India to achieve the world number one rank in doubles, following her stupendous title win at the WTA Family Circle Cup with partner Martina Hingis, in Charleston.
The top-seeded Indo-Swiss pair blew away the challenge of Casey Dellacqua and Darija Jurak 6-0 6-4 in just 57 minutes in the lop-sided final of the $731,000 clay court event.
Sania took 470 points from the win to take her tally to 7965 as she jumped past Italy’s Sara Errani (7640) and Roberta Vinci (7640) to sit atop the ranking table.
It is Sania’s third successive title win with Hingis and they have not lost as a single match since joining forces in March. They won trophy in Indian Wells, which was their first tournament together and followed up that with win in Miami. Sania and Hingis have lost only three sets in 14 matches, spread over three tournaments.

2. Gujarat government launches industrial tourism to showcase development
In a first of its kind initiative in the country, Gujarat government is promoting a tour package covering major industrial installations which have earned global acclaim for the state.
Some of the major attractions of this recently launched tour package include a visit to Tata Nano plant in Sanand, Pipavav port .near Amreli, Alang ship breaking yard in Bhavnagar and Amul Dairy in Anand.
The package, called Industrial Tour of Gujarat, has been offered by city-based Akshar Travels Pvt Ltd, official partner of state-run tourism agency Tourism Corporation of Gujarat Ltd (TCGL), which is promoting the tour on its website. "After the recent Vibrant Summit, people from all over the world hves developed curiosity to find out more about Gujarat's achievements in the industrial sector, as it is now termed as the upcoming industrial hub of India. Thus, we have proposed this idea of industrial tour, which was accepted by the state government," said Manish Sharma.

3. New Zealand won Sultan Azlan Shah Cup men’s hockey tournament by defeating Australia
New Zealand  won the 2015 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup men’s hockey tournament. In the final clash played at the Sultan Azlan Shah Stadium in Ipoh, Malaysia, New Zealand defeated World Champions Australia 3-1.
New Zealand’s win was steered by three saves from goalkeeper Devon Manchester.
New Zealand won the title for only the second time since the inception of Sultan Azlan Shah Cup competition in 1983. New Zealand’s first victory came in 2012 against Argentina.

4.  KVGB inks pact with LIC on ‘PM Jeevan Jyoti’ scheme
 Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB), a regional rural bank headquartered in Dharwad, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Life Insurance Corporation of India under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana’. It aims at providing insurance cover to all the Aadhar-linked savings account holders of the bank in the age group of 18 to 50 years.
Speaking at a function to mark the signing of the pact, Ashok Reddy, Chairman of the bank, said that being a regional rural bank KVGB has a greater role to play in ensuring that the insurance products reach to the needy.
People who join the ‘Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana’ will be eligible for life insurance up to ₹2 lakh for a premium of ₹330 per annum.Stating that the bank would strive hard to popularise this product, he said it has a hope to reach more than 20 lakh people by September.

5. Yuki Bhambri won ITF Uzbekistan F1 Futures Singles Title
Indian tennis player Yuki Bhambri won the Uzbekistan F1 Futures Men’s singles title by defeating Dzmitry Zyrmont of Serbia.Yuki defeated his rival in two straight sets 6-2 6-4 in the final match held in Karshi, Uzbekistan.
The 15000 US dollars ITF Futures trophy was held between 6 April 2015 and 12 April 2015.
The doubles title was won by Alexandar Vasilenko and Anton Zaitcev of Russia.
At present, Yuki is at the 256th position in the ATP World Tour singles ranking.

6. Jitu Rai won Bronze in 10-m Air Pistol Men event at ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Cup in Changwon
Indian shooter Jitu Rai won Bronze medal at the 10-meter Air Pistol Men final in the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Rifle/Pistol World Cup held in Changwon, South Korea.
The Gold medal of the event was won by Jin Jongoh of South Korea and Silver medal was won by Nuang Ye Tun of Myanmar. Jin Jongoh is five-time Olympic medallist and the reigning World Champion.
It was the fourth world cup medal for Jitu. Earlier in 2014, he had won three medals at the ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Cup and ISSF Rifle/Pistol/Shotgun World Cup held in Maribor (Slovenia) and Munich (Germany) respectively.

7. PM Narendra Modi gifted painting titled Tree of Life to French President Francois Hollande
A painting titled Tree of Life was gifted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to French President Francois Hollande during his visit to France from 9 April to 12 April 2015.
The painting reflects traditional societal respect for nature in India and tree as a divine gift central to human life is a recurring element in Indian artistic practiceThe Tree of Life, with multiple roots and branches like a banyan tree, is a motif for a tree’s benevolence, fruit, seeds, shelter, healing, procreation and regeneration faculties that sustain life and clean the environment.
The painting is the work of Bhaskar Mahapatra, an Odisha artist and the art form is pigments on silk which he has been practicing for last thirty years along with rest of his family. He works from his home in the heritage crafts village of Raghurajpur.
Bhaskar Mahapatra, who has been honoured by Lalit Kala Akademi, is inspired by his training and expertise in palm leaf painting and pattachitra.

8. 1971 War Hero Lt General Hanut Singh Died
Lt General (retd) Hanut Singh, the recipient of the Mahavir Chakra and hero of 1971 Indo-Pak war, died in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. He was 82.
Singh, who was famous as Sant General died, while meditating.He led the 17 Poona Horse regiment during the 1971 war in the Basantar battle, leading to heavy losses on the Pakistan Army by destroying a number of Pakistani tanks. He commanded the regiment in the 1971 war in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.He was the cousin of former Union Minister Jaswant Singh and after his retirement in 1991, he founded Shivbala Yogi Ashram Parisar in Dehradun.
