1. Sania Mirza seals historic Wimbledon crown with Hingis
Indian tennis star Sania Mirza scripted history by becoming the first from the country to win a women’s doubles Grand Slam trophy as she lifted the Wimbledon title with Swiss partner Martina Hingis after a stunning come-from-behind triumph, here.
Twelve years after turning Pro, 28-year-old Sania laid hands on her first women’s doubles Major title when she and Hingis battled past the second seeded Russian team of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 5—7 7—6 (4) 7—5 in a thrilling final.
In what can be considered an interesting coincidence, it was at these very historic courts that Sania had won the women’s doubles junior Wimbledon championship with Russian partner Alisa Kleybanova in 2003.
Sania had come close to winning a women’s doubles Major in 2011 when she reached the French Open final with Elena Vesnina but ended up runners-up.
The trophy added to the list of firsts that Sania has against her name. She had become India’s first woman player to win a Grand Slam when she won the Australian Open with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi in 2009.
She later added the French Open (2012 with Bhupathi) and US Open (2014 with Bruno Soares) to her mixed doubles collection.
2. Serena holds off battling Muguruza to win Wimbledon
Serena Williams claimed a sixth Wimbledon title and fourth successive grand slam crown by suppressing the spirited attacking instincts of 20th-seeded Spaniard Garbine Muguruza to win Saturday's final 6-4 6-4.
American Williams reinforced her stranglehold on the women's game by overcoming an early wobble and resisting a battling fightback to claim a 21st grand slam title that leaves her one behind German Steffi Graf's record haul of professional era majors.
The world number one was simply too powerful and too consistent for surprise 21-year-old finalist Muguruza, who began with a valiant positive approach but could not maintain her early high level.
After losing a close first set and battling bravely to come back from 5-1 down in the second, the Spaniard was eventually downed after one hour and 23 minutes of combat, to leave Williams to receive the acclaim of the Centre Court crowd.
Williams now holds all four majors at the same time -- the so-called 'Serena Slam' -- having also won the U.S., Australian and French Open titles.
3. Vodafone case: India names Rodrigo Oreamuno as arbitrator
The government has appointed international lawyer Rodrigo Oreamuno to arbitrate on its behalf in the Rs. 20,000 crore tax case with the UK telecom major Vodafone.
Costa Rica-based Oreamuno replaces former Chief Justice of India RC Lahoti who had in May recused himself.
“Rodrigo Oreamuno has been named as the arbitrator from the Indian side,” a source said when asked if the government has decided on a arbitrator in the Vodafone case.
Vodafone has already named Yves Fortier of Canada as its nominee on the panel.
Oreamuno and Fortier would now name a third arbitrator, who will act as a chairman of the tribunal for the case.
The Government had in June 2014 appointed former Chief Justice of India RC Lahoti as arbitrator in the tax dispute case. However, in May 2015 Lahoti recused himself from the arbitration process.
The Government and Vodafone had earlier this year decided on the third arbitrator — Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf of the International Court of Justice. He, however, declined to be part of the three-member panel in June.
Following an international arbitration notice by Vodafone, the previous UPA government in May 2014 withdrew its conciliation offer to settle the tax dispute.
The Government had earlier approved conciliation with Vodafone in June 2013 in a bid to resolve the capital gains tax dispute.
While the basic tax demand was Rs. 7,990 crore, the total outstanding, including interest and penalty, is estimated to have risen to Rs. 20,000 crore.
The Supreme Court had ruled in Vodafone’s favour in 2012, saying the company was not liable to pay any tax over the acquisition of assets in India from Hong Kong-based Hutchison.
The Government, however, amended the tax laws with retrospective effect following the Supreme Court judgment and claim taxes.
4. US approves major Non-NATO Ally status to Tunisia
United States has approved major Non-NATO Ally (MNNA) status to Tunisia. Decision in this regard was taken by US State Department. With this Tunisia became the 16th country to become a MNNA of US.
5. President Pranab Mukherjee Greets Montenegro on National Day
President Pranab Mukherjee today extended greetings and felicitations to the government and the people of Montenegro on their national day.
"On behalf of the government, the people of India and on my own behalf, I have the pleasure to convey warm greetings and felicitations to you and to the friendly people of Montenegro on the occasion of your national day," President Mukherjee said in a message to President of Montenegro Filip Vujanovic.
"India and Montenegro enjoy a tradition of warm and friendly relations. I am confident that our cooperation will continue to grow in the years to come to our mutual benefit," an official release in New Delhi cited the president as having said in his message on the occasion
6. India, Kyrgyzstan to Hold Annual Joint Military Exercises
Seeking a peaceful and secure neighbourhood amidst threat of terrorism and extremism, India and Kyrgyzstan today signed four agreements including one on bolstering defence cooperation and holding annual joint military exercises.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived in Bishkek last night as part of his eight-day six-nation tour to Central Asia, emphasised the need to combat terrorism and extremism which he described as a threat without borders.
"We both seek a peaceful and secure neighbourhood at a time of challenges in our region. And, we have shared interest in combating extremism and terrorism that has become a threat without borders," he said following his talks with President Almazbek Atambayev.
The two countries signed four key agreements including on cooperation in defence and culture fields.
Two MoU were also signed for cooperation between the Election Commissions of the two countries and on cooperation in the sphere of Standards, a move that will help economic relations.
Prime Minister Modi underlined that his visit to the countries in the region "demonstrates the importance that we attach to a new level of relationship with Central Asia. Kyrgyzstan is a key part of that vision".
7. Satnam Singh makes NBA Summer League debut
Satnam Singh Bhamara, the first Indian hoopster drafted in a National Basketball Association team, made his 2015 NBA Summer League debut for Dallas Mavericks against New Orleans.
The 7-foot 2-inch Satnam had four points, three rebounds and one assist in a total game time of just over 10 minutes, as New Orleans Pelicans had to play all 48 minutes in their 90-86 triumph over the Dallas Mavericks, at UNLV’s Cox Pavilion yesterday.
A satisfied Satnam said he feels he will soon arrive on the big stage.
