1. Balachandran M re-appointed Non-Executive Chairman of payments  Corporation
 Balachandran M has been re-appointed the Non-Executive Chairman of National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) for a further period of two years.
He assumed office as Non-Executive Chairman two years back following the resignation of former NPCI Chairman N. R. Narayana Murthy.
Balachandran incidentally has served as Chairman & Managing Director of Bank of India, Director-IBPS, and Nominee Director of the RBI to the board of NPCI before his appointment in NPCI.
The Corporation has grown in the last two years, particularly in RuPay card, immediate payment service (IMPS), and Aadhaar-based electronic transfer systems


2. Scientist Dr Modadugu Vijay Gupta to receive inaugural Sunhak Peace Prize

Noted Indian agricultural scientist Dr Modadugu Vijay Gupta has been chosen for the 

inaugural Sunhak Peace Prize. He will receive the first Sunhak Peace Prize in South Korean Capital city of Seoul along with President of Kiribati Islands Anote Tong. Dr. M. V. Gupta has been selected for this award for his pioneering work in the blue revolution. He has invested his entire life to developing sustainable aquaculture as an alternative solution to the future food crisis. Anote Tong has been chosen for this award for creating global awareness on the severity of climate change issue and sought for action by the international community for its solution.

3. Rajiv Mangla appointed as CTO of Snapdeal
Rajiv Mangla was  appointed as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of eCommerce major Snapdeal. As a CTO, Mangla will help the organisation in establishing its technical vision and will lead all aspects of technological development of the company.
He succeeded Amitabh Misra, who vacated the post in February 2015 to start a new travel venture Bona Vita Technologies. Mangla is a graduate from IIT Mumbai.
Prior to this appointment, Mangla was serving as Vice President (Engineering) of Digital Marketing at Adobe Systems and has spent about 10 years in this company. Mangla had also been an entrepreneur for 10 years and founded a couple of companies. 

4. Tripura decided to implement National Food Security Act
State Cabinet of Tripura decided to implement the National Food Security Act (NFSA). The NFSA will be come into effect from 1 September 2015 and will be continued till 2021.
Implementation of the Act will make Tripura the first state to implement the NFSA in entire north-eastern region.
Its implementation will benefit over 25 lakh people from more than six lakh families of the state. This would cause an extra burden of over 16.73 crore rupees on the State Government in the form of subsidy.

5. Union Government launches E-Payment Module to deposit compensatory levies into CAMPA Funds
Union Government has launched an e-payment module to make the payment of compensatory levies into the Compensatory Afforestation Management Planning Authority (CAMPA) Funds. It was launched by Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar in New Delhi in order to make these payments for diversion of forest land quicker and more transparent. The e-payment module has a designated account for the payment purpose, depending on the States in which the forest land is proposed to be diverted. Initially, the payments will be allowed through two modes viz. online challan mode through RTGS and NEFT and offline challan mode. The deposit of compensatory levies through the e-portal will be optional till August 31, 2015 and will be accepted only through the e-module from 1 September 2015. With the launch of the e-payment portal, henceforth no payments will be accepted other than through the portal or unless specifically ordered guidelines issued by Ad-hoc CAMPA.

6. Union Government gives nod to 6 new SEZ proposals
nion Government has approved six new proposals 6 Special Economic Zones (SEZs) proposals including four from Information Technology and IT enabled Service (ITeS) sector. This decision was taken by the Board of Approval (BoA) for SEZ (under the aegis of Union Commerce Ministry) chaired by Commerce Secretary Rita Teaotia. 
The approved SEZ proposals are HCL IT City Lucknow- set up IT/ITeS zones in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. 
Loma IT Park Developer- set up IT/ITeS zones in Mumbai, Maharashtra. 
North Mumbai International Commodity Township- It is proposed free trade warehousing zone in Thane, Maharashtra.
 It should be noted that SEZs account for about 25 per cent of the India’s total exports. In 2013-14, exports from these zones had rose to 4.94 lakh crore rupees from 22,840 crore rupees in 2005-06.

7. Usain Bolt won 200 meter title at 2015 World Championships in Athletics in Beijing
Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt  won the 200 meter title at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics held at Beijing in China.
Bolt completed the race in 19.55 seconds surpassing his American rival Justin Gatlin who completed the race in 19.74 seconds.
Earlier, on 23 August 2015, he also won the 100 metre gold against the same rival Justin Gatlin.

8. Air India won Guru Tegh Bahadur Hockey title after 7 years
Air India's Hockey team  won the Guru Tegh Bahadur Hockey title. In the finals played at the MHA-Mahindra Stadium in Mumbai, Air India defeated defending champions Army XI 3-1 via the penalty shoot-out after the two teams were deadlocked goalless in regular play. 
Air India regained the title after seven years. Last time, it won the title in 2008.
Air India's goalkeeper Adrian D'Souza won the Player of the final Award from the tournament's organizers, Mumbai Hockey Association Limited. Army’s goalkeeper Najmudeen was declared as the Best Goalkeeper in the tournament. 

9. Festival Thiru Onam celebrated in Kerala
hiru Onam (Thiruvonam) festival, the most auspicious day of the Onam, was celebrated with traditional gaiety on 28 August 2015 in Kerala. The celebrations of Onam started with Atham ten days ago.  
 Thiru Onam celebrated by Keralites without any boundaries of caste or religion, marks birthday of Sri Padmanabham, the presiding deity of Thiruvananthapuram. It is the most important day of Onam.
Thiru Onam celebrations started with the colourful floral pattern called Ona Pookkalam on the floors to welcome Maha Bali.

10. Call To Action Summit 2015 on ending preventable child and maternal deaths held in New Delhi
The Call To Action Summit 2015 on ending preventable child and maternal deaths was held on 27 August and 28 August 2015 in New Delhi.
The summit was a prelude to the United Nations Summit for the adoption of post-2015 development agenda that will be held in September 2015 in New York.
During the summit, the participants took stock of progress, best practices for ending preventable child and maternal deaths and discussed further steps to be taken in the area.
Further, The Every Woman Every Child (EWEC) movement initiated by the UN Secretary General office was also a pivotal area for deliberations at the Summit.

11. Maharashtra government acquires Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s London House
Maharashtra government has bought the house in London where social reformer and architect of the Indian Constitution Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar had stayed in the 1920s. State government has acquired this house in 3.1 million pound deal owing to its cultural and national importance and pride of millions of people of India. The property is three-storey house located on 10, King Henry Road, NW3 of London. B R Ambedkar had stayed in this house during his days as a student at the London School of Economics in 1920-21. State government now will convert this property into a international memorial-cum-museum and will be open to public. Earlier in January 2015, state government had issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) to buy Dr B. R. Ambedkar’s London house to the Indian High Commission in UK.

12. Lionel Messi named UEFA Best Player in Europe over Cristiano Ronaldo
Lionel Messi was named the UEFA Best Player in Europe for the 2014-15 season for helping Barcelona to a Treble of trophies.
The Argentine star defeated the other finalists, his Barcelona teammate Luis Suarez and Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, who won the award a year ago, after a live vote of journalists.
Messi received the accolade after Thursday's Champions League group stage draw was made, as the holders were placed against Bayer Leverkusen, Roma and BATE Borisov.
