1. Pakistan has postponed the 19th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit after India and four other countries announced to boycott the Summit. The summit was schedule to be held on November 9th and 10th, 2016 in Islamabad, capital city of Pakistan.

2. Polythene will be banned at all national monuments on the second anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission which coincides with Gandhi Jayanti.

3. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India Sanitation conference (INDOSAN) in New Delhi ahead of second anniversary of Swachh Bharat Mission.

4. Arundhati Bhattacharya will remain the chairperson of the State Bank of India (SBI) for another year.

5.  Every year 1st October is observed as International day of Older Persons.

6. Bengaluru's Kieren Dsouza has become the first Indian to complete the Spartathlon, widely described as the "world's toughest race". 

7. The Centre has constituted a four-member Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) under the Chairmanship of M.S. Sahoo. The oath of office was administered by Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Arun Jaitley in New Delhi. 

8. At a time when the Swachh Bharat Mission is in full swing, the Union Ministry of Tourism has conferred the Cleanest Tourist Destination on the Sikkim capital (Gangtok). Chandigarh and Mysore were felicitated for 'Clean Cities in million plus population category' and Gangtok for 'Cleanest Tourism Destination'.

9. An Indian NGO, Swayam Shikshan Prayog, has bagged the UN climate award this year. The NGO, which trains women to become clean energy entrepreneurs across Maharashtra and Bihar, is one of the 13 projects to be recognised at the forthcoming UN climate summit in Marrakesh in November.

10. India, the world’s third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, on Sunday ratified the landmark Paris climate deal, giving a significant push for the deal to enter into force by the end of this year.  Permanent Representative to the U.N. Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin handed over the Instrument of Ratification signed by President Pranab Mukherjee, to Santiago Villalpando, the Head of the Treaties Division at the U.N., at a special ceremony here attended by top U.N. officials and senior diplomats to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary.

11. Yoshinori Ohsumi of Japan  won the Nobel Medicine Prize for his work on autophagy — a process whereby cells “eat themselves” — which when disrupted can cause Parkinson’s and diabetes.

12. Reliance Group has entered into a strategic partnership with Dassault Aviation of France to execute the largest defence offset contract worth up to Rs. 30,000 crore

13. S. Sivakumar, professor at Indian Law Institute (ILI), in the last week of September 2016 was appointed as full-time member of the 21st Law Commission of India.

14. First Monday of October: World Habitat Day-The World Habitat Day was on 3 October 2016 observed across the world with the theme Housing at the Centre.

15. Indian-origin South African girl Kiara Nirghin won the Google Science Fair prize 2016. She won this grand prize of 50000 US dollars scholarship for using orange peel to develop a cheaper super-absorbent material that helps soil retain water.

16. The 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics was on 4 October 2016 one half awarded to David J Thouless and the other half jointly to F Duncan M Haldane and J Michael Kosterlitz for theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter.

17. The State Bank of India (SBI)  became the first domestic bank of India to open a branch in the capital city of Yangon, Myanmar. Ghanshyam Srivastava will be the Chief Executive Officer of the SBI Yangon branch.

18. Ashish Vohra was appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Reliance Nippon Life Insurance Ltd. The position of CEO of the company was lying vacant after Anup Rau left the company in June 2016.

19. Kersti Kaljulaid was elected as the President of Estonia by the parliament. With this, Kaljulaid will become Estonia’s first female president.

20. Jharkhand has become the first state in the country to implement Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) in Kerosene Scheme. The scheme is being implemented in four identified districts of the state from 1st of October 2017. These districts are Chatra, Hazaribagh, Khunti and Jamtara.

21. Film-maker and elephant researcher Prajna Chowta (46) has been appointed Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite (Knight in the National Order of Merit) by the French government. She has been conferred with the France’s one of the highest civilian recognitions in recognition of a life devoted to caring for wild Asian elephants.

22. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has decided to cut its key policy rate, or the repo rate, by 25 bps to 6.25 per cent. New Governor Urjit Patel, who took over a month ago from Dr Raghuram Rajan, announced his first monetary policy .

23. M Sathiyavathy has been appointed as Secretary, Ministry of Labour & Employment, on superannuation of Shankar Agarwal on September 30,2016.

 24. France has become the first country in the world to ban disposable plastic cups and plates.

25. Daniel Ricciardo  won the 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix held at the Sepang International Circuit in Selangor, Malaysia.

26.  Nayanjot Lahiri, Professor of History at the Ashoka University, was  awarded with the 2016 John F. Richards Prize for her book Ashoka in Ancient India.

27. The World Teachers’ Day (WTD) 2016 was observed across the world on 5 October 2016.

28. The Union Cabinet  approved the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and the African Asian Rural Development Organization (AARDO) for capacity building programmes in the field of rural development.

29. India and Singapore have signed three agreements (MoUs) in the fields of skill development and IPR to boost bilateral relations between them. These agreements were signed in New Delhi during Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s official state visit to India.

30. The 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry  was awarded to Jean-Pierre Sauvage, Sir James Fraser Stoddart and Bernard L Feringa.

31. The Union Government has made Aadhaar card mandatory for availing cooking gas (LPG) subsidies after November 2016. In this regard, the Union Petroleum Ministry has asked Oil marketing companies (OMCs) to facilitate enrollments of Aadhaar of the consumers to avail the subsidy.

 32. India’s latest communication satellite GSAT-18 was  successfully launched by a heavy duty rocket of Arianespace from the spaceport of Kourou in French Guiana.

33. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA)  gave its approval to an acquisition by ONGC Videsh Ltd (OVL) for 11% stake in JSC Vankorneft from Rosneft Oil Company (Rosneft), Russia’s national oil company.

34. Union Finance Ministry constituted a Public Debt Management Cell (PDMC). The cell was created to streamline government borrowings and better cash management with the overall objective of deepening bond markets.

35. India’s Ganganjeet Bhullar  won the 2016 Shinhan Donghae Open in South Korea. It is his sixth title on the Asian Tour.

 36. The Union Cabinet  approved setting up of a Medical Devices Manufacturing Park (Medipark) at Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram District, Tamil Nadu through a special purpose Vehicle.

37. The Union Government has appointed senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Sushil Chandra as the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). Decision in this regard was taken by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Sushil Chandra is IRS officer of 1980 batch.

38. Former ISRO Chairman and space scientist Prof Udupi Ramachandra Rao became the first Indian to be inducted in the Hall of Fame of International Astronautical Federation (IAF). 

39. Jammu and Kashmir Bank  appointed Parvez Ahmed as Chairman and CEO of the bank.

40. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2016 to Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos for his resolute efforts to bring the country's more than 50-year-long civil war to an end, a war that has cost the lives of at least 220 000 Colombians and displaced close to six million people.

41. India has welcomed the selection of Portugal’s former premier Antonio Guterres as the next UN Secretary General to replace Ban Ki-moon at the beginning of next year.

42.  India is hosting the 2016 Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) from November 3 to 5, 2016 in New Delhi. This will be second time India hosting AMCDRR. The conference will be hosted by Union Government in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).

43.President Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the first edition of World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The summit was organised by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) with the theme Beyond 2015: People, Planet and Progress.

44. Indian shooter Jitu Rai on 6 October 2016 clinched a silver medal in the 50 meter pistol event of the ISSF World Cup Final at Bologna, Italy. Jitu, 29, shot a score of 188.8 to finish behind China's Wei Pang at 190.6. Italy's Giuseppe Giordano settled for the bronze.

45. Manipur-based theatre legend Heisnam Kanhailal passed away on 6 October 2016 following a brief illness in Imphal. He was 75.

46. Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling was honoured with prestigious Sustainable Development Leadership Award of the The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). He was presented with the award by President Pranab Mukherjee during “World Sustainable Development Summit” in New Delhi.

47. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh announced that India-Pakistan border will be completely sealed by December 2018. Announcement in this regard was made after Union Home Minister held meeting of representatives of 4 states sharing border with Pakistan in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.

 48. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has collaborated with social networking giant Facebook to register young voters in 5 states, which are going to polls in 2017. These five states are Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Manipur and Uttarakh.The purpose first-of-its-kind voter registration drive is to encourage youth to participate in the democratic exercise.

53. Jeremy Corbyn, Leader of the Labour Party and Leader of the Opposition, appointed Indian-origin barrister Shami Chakrabarti to the UK’s shadow cabinet.

54.  India's Harika Dronavalli defeated World No. 1 Hou Yifan of China to be at joint fourth position in the Isle of Man international Chess tournament.

55. World Post Day 2016 was on 9 October 2016 observed across the world with the theme Innovation, Integration and Inclusion.

56. Indian pharmaceutical companies have ranked low at 19th position with an overall score of 59 out of 100 among in the Biopharmaceutical Competitiveness & Investment (BCI) Survey

57. Sprinter Srabani Nanda has bagged the 24th Ekalabya Award for the year 2016 in recognition of her sporting excellence.

58. Two economists Oliver Hart and Bengt Holmstrom have won the 2016 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.

59. Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska won the 2016 China Open Women's Singles at the National Tennis Center in Beijing, China.

60. Luo Zhaohui was appointed as China's Ambassador to India, in accordance with a decision of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, the top legislature of China.

61. Andy Murray won the 2016 China Open Men's Singles title at the National Tennis Center in Beijing, China.

62.  Russia vetoed a UN Security Council draft resolution demanding an end to the bombing of Aleppo city in Syria.

63. NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has detected Great Balls of Fire (GBF), a mysterious super-hot blobs of gas seen near a dying star.

64. Former Indian Foreign Service officer Ms. Renu Pall has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Austria.
