1. Scientists discover mesentery, a new human organ in digestive system

1. Scientists from Ireland have claimed discovery of a new human organ named the mesentery that exists in the digestive system. It will be human body’s 79th organ. 
2. Mesentery connects the intestine to the abdomen. The organ was previously thought to consist of fragmented and disparate structures.


2. Google launches My Business and Digital Unlocked tool for small and medium businesses

1. Internet giant Google launched two new initiatives My Business and Digital Unlocked to train and help small and medium businesses (SMBs) in India capitalise on the digitisation wave faster. 
2. These initiatives were launched by Google CEO Sundar Pichai in New Delhi in presence of Union IT and law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad in New Delhi.


3. January 4: World Braille Day

1. The World Braille Day is observed very year across the world on 4 January to mark the birth anniversary of Louis Braille, inventor of Braille script or Braille code. Observance of the day helps people to spread the importance of Braille language and also help people to produce works in this language to allow visually impaired people to read the works. 
2. To commemorate this day several NGOs as well as other organizations come together to raise awareness about the apathy towards blind people and to help them be equal among rest of the people.


4. S Padmanabhan appointed as Chairman of Tata Power Company 

1. S Padmanabhan was appointed as chairman of Tata Power Company after Cyrus Mistry resigned from the post following his ouster from Tata Sons. Until 2014, executive director of operations of the company and was brought back as additional director on the board in December 2016. 
2. He is also the executive chairman of Tata Business Excellence Group. Recently he was appointed as the head of group for human resources for Tata Sons. He is associated Tata group for 34 years, of which 26 were with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).


5. Sitar Maestro Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan passes away 

1. Renowned sitar player Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan passed away in Mumbai after a brief illness. He was 88. He was last survivor of the ‘Sitar Trinity’ of India along with the late Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Vilayat Khan. 
2. He hailed from the Indore Gharana. He is credited for innovating the unique music style of ‘Jafferkhani Baaj’.


6. Jovenel Moise confirmed as Haiti’s new President 

1. Businessman Jovenel Moise (48) won the 2016 Haitian Presidential Elections. He was representing former President Michel Martelly’s Haitian Tet Kale Party (PHTK). In the Presidential elections held in November 2016 Jovenel Moise won by majority by getting 55.6% of the total votes cast. 
2. His closest rival Jude Celestine received only 19.5% of the votes.Earlier in first round of elections, held in October 2015 he had received 32.8% of total votes cast.


7. Mahindra Singh Dhoni steps down as captain of T-20 & ODI 

1. Mahindra Singh Dhoni has announced his decision to step down as captain of Team India’s limited over cricket matches i.e. T-20 and ODI format. 
2. With this, Dhoni relinquished captaincy in all formats of the game. 3. Earlier in December 2014, he had stepped down as Captain of India’s Test team. He had led India in an ODI for the first time against Australia in September 2007 at Bengaluru. His last one-dayer as captain was against New Zealand in October 2016 at Visakhapatnam.


8. India wins 2016 SAFF women’s Championship India won 2016 
1. South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women’s Football Championship title by defeating Bangladesh by 3-1 goals. 
2. It was India’s fourth consecutive win in the SAFF women’s Championship since it was launched in 2010. This was Bangladesh’s maiden final appearance in the championship.


9. Sir Tim Barrow appointed as UK’s new ambassador to EU 

1. UK Senior diplomat Sir Tim Barrow was appointed the new ambassador to the European Union (EU). He replaced Sir Ivan Rogers. 
2. Now he will now play a key role in triggering Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty to leave the bloc (or Brexit), as a seasoned and tough negotiator.
