1. Ahead of Modi's visit, India pushes Japan for nuclear deal
Taking up the issue of delay in signing a civil nuclear agreement with Japan, foreign minister Sushma Swaraj on Sunday told her Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida that it was time the deal was concluded.

2. Erdogan wins Turkey’s first direct presidential vote
 Presidential hopeful and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set to become Turkey’s first elected President.
Mr. Erdogan, head of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), led Sunday’s presidential polls with 51.8 per cent of votes.



3. China wants India to play key role in ‘Silk Road’ plan
With China firming up in the coming two or three months a “masterplan” for its ambitious land and maritime “new Silk Road” project, a top official has said that Beijing wants India to play a key role in the initiative.
Beijing envisages an economic corridor linking its south-western Yunnan province through Myanmar to Kolkata as a key segment of a land-based “Silk Road economic belt”, and is also planning to boost ties with port cities, such as Chennai, through a “Maritime Silk Road” starting out from south-eastern Fujian province and linking littoral countries in the region.

4. Army chief in Siachen ahead of Modi’s visit
 Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Ladakh on August 12, Chief of the Army Staff Gen. Dalbir Singh on Sunday visited Siachen, the world’s highest battlefield, in Jammu and Kashmir.
On his first visit to Siachen after taking over as Army Chief on July 31, Gen. Singh had an extensive interaction with the jawans and officers of 14 Corps, first at Leh and later at the glacier. He was accompanied by General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Northern Command Lt. Gen. D.S. Hooda.

5. Fired-up Tsonga stuns Federer to win Toronto Masters

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won the Toronto Masters with a win over Roger Federer, two years after injuring himself at the same event in a freak collision with a fire hydrant.
French 13th seed Tsonga hit 11 aces and 26 winners to win Sunday's final 7-5, 7-6 (7/3) while Federer, two days after his 33rd birthday, was undone by 37 unforced errors.
