1. India, Japan to ‘upgrade’ Defence cooperation
 India and Japan on Monday decided to “upgrade” and “strengthen” their defence cooperation as they asked officials to launch consultations to promote military equipment collaboration and accelerate discussions on modalities for the sale of Japanese US—2 amphibian aircraft.
The decision to firm—up defence ties came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held summit—level talks with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe
2. Core sector growth slides to 2.7 % in July
 Official data for output of the core sectors in July has taken the edge off the exuberance over the 10-quarter high gross domestic product (GDP) growth numbers for April-June 2014. Data released on Monday showed that growth of the eight core industries slid 2.7 per cent during July on shrinking output of crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilizers and steel. In June, on the back of smart performances of the cement and electricity industries, the eight core industries had grown 7.3 per cent, the fastest in nine months.
Crude oil output declined by 1 per cent, natural gas was down 9 per cent, production of refinery products shrunk 5.5 per cent, fertilizers output was 4.2 per cent lower and steel production recorded a negative growth of 3.4 per cent in July, according to the data of the Commerce and Industry Ministry.

3. Nalanda University reopens
The revived Nalanda University, an ancient international centre for learning in Bihar which has attracted over 1,000 applications from around the world, will begin its first academic session from September 1 with 15 students, including five women, and 10 faculty members, its vice-chancellor said.


4. India becomes sole number one in ICC ODI rankings
 Their dominating performance against England coupled with Australia’s shock loss to Zimbabwe on Monday made India the sole number one team in the latest ICC ODI rankings issued here.
“World champion India have been confirmed as the number-one ranked side in the Reliance ICC ODI Team Rankings following Zimbabwe’s three wickets victory over Australia in a triangular series match in Harare on Sunday,” the ICC said in a statement.

5. Abishek Bachchan-owned Jaipur Pink Panthers win Pro Kabaddi title
 Jaipur Pink Panthers pulled off a 35-24 victory over U Mumba to emerge champion of the inaugural STAR ProKabaddi League here on Sunday.
Maninder Singh’s early raid points proved useful as fellow catchers, inspired by captain Navneet Gautam, came into their own.
Maninder (seven raid points) and all-rounder Rajesh Narwal (fve raid points, two tackle points) were the most effective. Attacker Jasvir Singh displayed tactical ability by using up 30 seconds each time he leapt into action, won four raid points and did his bit to unsettle the rivals. Prashant Chavan chipped in with six tackle points.
U Mumba skipper Anup Kumar ended up on the losing side despite a match high 11 raid points. The Panthers defenders treated him with caution and respect as he stole the first four points in the final.

6. Carolina, Chen clinch world badminton titles
China’s Chen Long and Spain’s Carolina Marin surprised their opponents in their respective finals to clinch the men’s and women’s singles titles of the World Badminton Championships

7. $7 billion Mars rocket set for 2018 debut: NASA
 The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has announced the launch its $7 billion Space Launch System (SLS) - the heavy-lift, exploration class rocket under development - by November 2018.
NASA officials approved the programme’s progression from formulation to development, something no other exploration class vehicle has achieved since the agency built the space shuttle.
“We are on a journey of scientific and human exploration that leads to Mars. We are firmly committed to building the launch vehicle and other supporting systems that will take us on that journey,” said NASA administrator Charles Bolden. 

8. Bangalore to host India Nano 7th edition in December
 The 7th Edition of Bangalore India Nano will be held on 5th and 6th December in Bangalore.
Over hundred leading International and Indian companies are expected to participate in Bangalore India Nano 2014, organisers said in a statement. International participation is expected from USA, UK, Japan, Korea, China, Singapore, Germany, Iran, Switzerland and Australia for the event.
The focus areas are: advanced materials, energy, food, healthcare & medicine, nano fabrication and also new areas like oil & gas, devices & sensors, scanning probe microscopy, surface treatments & coatings. The event will also throw light on business opportunities globally, the statement added.

9. Vijay Mallya declared 'wilful defaulter' by United Bank of India
State-run United Bank of India on Monday became the first lender to
 declare debt-ridden Kingfisher Airlines and its promoter Vijay Mallya as wilful defaulters.
"We have declared Vijay Mallya and three other directors of Kingfisher Airlines as wilful defaulters," United Bank of India executive director Deepak Narang said.

10. Versatile Bapu is no more
The man whose pencil etched what was universally accepted as the epitome of beauty is no more. Artist, cartoonist, film director, designer and painter, Bapu (born Sathiraju Lakshminarayana) leaves behind a legacy as one of the finest filmmakers on the firmament of Indian cinema.
He was 80 years old and is survived by two sons.
The legendary director who is credited with bringing Telugu films out of the studios passed away in Chennai on Sunday
