 1. Bharat Ratna for Vajpayee, Madan Mohan Malaviya
 
The President's Office on Wednesday announced the Bharat Ratna award to 
Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (posthumously) and former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The announcement was made on the eve of Mr. Vajpayee's 90th birthday and the 153rd birth anniversary of Pandit Malviya.
A Bharat Ratna for Pandit Malviya, a freedom fighter and the founder of the Benaras Hindu University was proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his election campaign. Justice Giridhar Malviya, the grandson of Pandit Malaviya was one of those who proposed the nomination of Mr. Modi from Varanasi parliamentary constituency. Mr. Vajpayee will be the seventh Prime Minister to receive the award, while Pandit Malviya will be the 12th person to be honoured posthumously.

2. Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil appointed as LoP in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly
Congressman Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil was  appointed as Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, the lower house.
His appointment was announced by the Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Haribhau Bagde in the Lower House.
Vikhe Patil's appointment came a day after the Nationalist Congress Party member Dhanjay Munde was appointed as Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra legislative council, the upper house.
3. RBI extended deadline for withdrawal of pre-2005 currency notes to 30 June 2015
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI)  extended the deadline for exchanging pre-2005 of various denominations by another six months till 30 June 2015.
RBI in a statement said that all such notes will continue to remain legal tender and can be exchanged for their full value. It has urged public to deposit the old design notes in their bank accounts or exchange them at a bank branch convenient to them.
Earlier, in March 2014, RBI had set the last date for public to exchange these notes was 1 January 2015.

4. Taiwan launched its largest Missile Warship Tuo Chiang
Taiwan  launched its largest ever missile warship named Tuo Chiang. The 500-tonne corvette missile is the first of its kind ever produced by Taiwan.
The ship is scheduled to be deployed in Taiwan waters after further tests in March 2015. The Tuo Chiang’s first captain is Lt. Commander Wang Te-chien.
The ship will boost Taiwan's defence capabilities against China that considers Taiwan as a part of its territory.
The Tuo Chiang’s launch came shortly after US Congress passed a bill authorizing the transfer and sale of up to four Perry-class frigates to Taiwan that were decommissioned by the US Navy.

5. India exported first warship CGS Barracuda to Mauritius
India  exported CGS Barracuda offshore patrol vessel (OPV) to Mauritius. This is the first warship ordered by a foreign country from shipyard of India.
The CGS Barracuda is a warship worth of 58-million US dollars (365 crore rupees). It measures 74.10 meter in length and is capable of moving at a maximum speed of 22 knots (37 kilometers an hour) with an approximate displacement of 1350 tonnes.
It has been designed for the usual OPV tasks - anti-piracy, anti-smuggling, anti-poaching and search and rescue. The additional capabilities include: pollution response, external fire fighting, and the movement by sea of troops.
The CGS Barracuda was built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), Kolkata.
Earlier, India has gifted several warships to smaller Indian Ocean countries such as Maldives, Seychelles and Mauritius. Sukanya-class OPV which is a used vessel was sold to Sri Lanka and now it serves as the flagship of Sri Lanka navy.

6. Snapdeal launched online Agri Store to aid farmers
E-retailing firm Snapdeal.com  launched the online Agri store offering agricultural products to the farmers. The store was launched on the occasion of National Farmer's Day.
The Agri Store aims to offer wide variety of farm items from seeds to fertilisers, farming tools and irrigation tools. This online store is also accessible through mobile phones, making it convenient for farmers to shop.
In the coming weeks, merchants across the country will add more products and categories in the Agri Store to make it a destination of choice for farmers seeking quality products with reliable service.
A Hindi version of the store will also be launched soon to aid farmers in making an informed decision.

7. Govt approves 100% FDI in medical devices sector
 The Government today allowed 100 per cent FDI under automatic route in medical devices sector to encourage the manufacturing of equipment, including diagnostic kits and other devices.
“Easing of norms for medical devices industry by creating special carve out in the extant FDI policy on pharma sector will encourage FDI inflows in this area,” said an official statement issued after the Union Cabinet meeting here.
The 100 per cent FDI, it added, will be permitted under the automatic route, meaning a foreign investor will not have to seek the permission of Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to acquire an existing company or set up a new manufacturing unit in the medical devices sector.
The condition of ‘non-compete clause’ would also not be applicable to greenfield (new project) as well as brownfield projects (existing units) of this industry.
Earlier FDI up to 100 per cent was permitted, subject to certain conditions. 

8. Assam toll rises to 62, backlash by Adivasis
 As the death toll mounted to 62 in the four attacks by NDFB(S) militants in Assam’s Sonitpur and Kokrajhar districts, angry Adivasi villagers today retaliated by setting ablaze houses of Bodos and took out protest marches.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that the majority of victims in the “barbaric” attacks that took place last evening were women and children and steps were being taken to ensure that the situation does not escalate. The Centre said it was rushing in 5,000 paramilitary personnel at the request of Assam government.
IGP (Law and Order) SN Singh told PTI that the death toll had risen to 62 with 37 deaths in Sonitpur and 25 in Kokrajhar after heavily armed militants belonging to the Songbijit faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) swooped down on the four remote Adivasi villages of the two districts and killed the inhabitants last evening.
In Sonitpur district, 31 people were killed in Maitalu Basti under Zinzia police station and six in Jungle basti under Dhekiajuli police station while 20 people were killed in Shantipur Ultapani under Kokrajhar police station and five in Pakhriguri under Serfanguri police station of Kokrajhar district, he said.
Search operations were continuing in these interior villages which lack proper road communication

9. New ED for BHEL Corporate R&D
 Umakanta Choudhury, General Manager In-charge of BHEL Corporate R&D Division, has been promoted as Executive Director with effect from December 22.
Choudhury, a Graduate from REC Rourkela and a Doctorate from IIT Kharagpur joined BHEL R&D Division in the year 1981 as an Engineer trainee and worked in the areas of Electrical Machines, according to a statement from BHEL.

10. Filmmaker Kailasam Balachander passed away
South Indian filmmaker Kailasam Balachander died on 23 December 2014 following a heart attack. He was 84.

11. Vijay Kelkar committee recommends autonomous status for Vidarbha region of Maharashtra
Maharashtra government had appointed committee to study the issue of balanced development of various regions of Maharashtra. It was headed by well-known economist Vijay Kelkar.
Committee’s recommendation report was recently tabled in the state Legislative Assembly

12. National Consumer Day being observed on 24th December
In India, 24th December is observed as National Consumer Day. On this day the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 had received the assent of the President.
The enactment of this Act was considered as a historic milestone in the consumer movement in the country.
This Act aims to provide consumers with effective safeguards against different types of exploitation such as defective goods, unsatisfactory services and unfair trade practices.
This day provides an opportunity for individuals to highlight the importance of the consumer movement and the need to make every consumer more aware of their rights and responsibilities.
It should be also noted that World Consumer Rights Day is observed on 15th March every year.
