1.United Nation and Mali government declares country Ebola-free
Mali Government has declared country Ebola free. It was announced after no new case of deadly virus was reported in last 42-day period (i.e. two incubation periods of 21 days for Ebola virus). While, United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) has also declared that Mali as Ebola free.
Key facts
Mali was the sixth West African country to record cases of Ebola virus.
First case was reported in October 2014.
As per World Health Organisation (WHO) in Mali, in total 8 cases were reported, killing 6 of them.


2. Indian-American Frank Islam presented with Martin Luther King Award
Frank Islam, an eminent Indian-American entrepreneur and philanthropist has been presented with the prestigious Martin Luther King Jr Award. He was given the award for his contribution to the legacy of the great leader through his efforts in international service and civil engagement.

3. World Future Energy Summit begins in Abu Dhabi
The World Future Energy Summit 2015 has begun in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is eight edition of the summit and will be four day event. It will provide platform to delegates including world leaders, international policy makers, industry leaders, investors, experts, academia, intellectuals and journalists from all over the world including India. Delegates will discuss the future of renewable energy and how to overcome the challenges in tapping potential of it.

4.Noted scholar Rajni Kothari passes away
Rajni Kothari, a noted political scientist, scholar and founder of the
Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), passed away a few hours ago, sources said. Kothari, , who is involved with the People’s Union of Civil Liberties, the Indian Council of Social Science Research and the International Foundation for Development Alternatives, has a vast body of academic work on Indian politics and society, such as Caste in Indian Politics (1973); Footsteps into the Future: Diagnosis of the Present World and a Design for an Alternative (1975); Politics in India (1982); In Search of Humane World Order (1989); Poverty: Human Consciousness and the Amnesia of Development (1995); and Communalism in Indian Politics (1998).
His memoirs, 'Uneasy is the Life of the Mind', was published in 2002

5. RBI cautions against foreign 'investment tourists'
The Reserve Bank of India official today cautioned against foreign "investment tourists" in debt markets, highlighting concerns about short-term flows. The comments from G. Padmanabhan, executive director at the RBI, came amid expectations that India will allow Euroclear settlements for government debt only for long-term investors. He added that RBI will increase foreign investment limits in govt debt in "calibrated and gradual manner". "The financial stability implication of 'investment tourists' exiting at a whiff of trouble has always to be kept in mind as we progress along the path of liberalization," said Padmanabhan in a speech uploaded by the RBI He was speaking to the Primary Dealers Association of India on Saturday at their annual meeting. The proposals for allowing international settlement of government bonds could increase attractiveness with foreign investors but also lead to creation of "NDF-like market overseas", said Padmanabhan. Gross market supply of debt will remain elevated "in the foreseeable future" as the government will continue to run deficits despite fiscal consolidation plans, he said.

HDFC bank was named among 50 most valuable banks in 2014 with a market capitalisation of 41.58 billion US dollar. It was ranked at 45th position. Apart from HDFC two other banks of India were listed in the list and they are

7. Kotak Mahindra Bank brings banking on social media platforms
In an attempt to connect to the net-savvy and socially connected customers, the private sector lender Kotak Mahindra Bank on Monday announced the launch of Jifi Saver, a savings bank account which can be managed via social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. To tap the growing e-commerce industry in the country and increasing users of social media platforms, Kotak Mahindra Bank will provide basic services like inquiry for balance, last few transactions, chequebook demand among a total 21 services under the name "Hashtag Banking (#banking ". Besides the normal banking services, the bank will also offer additional transaction points for purchase from select ecommerce partners to lure customers.

8.ICICI Bank launches money transfer service on Twitter
ICICI Bank, India's largest private bank, has launched its banking services on Twitter enabling customers to transfer money through the micro-blogging Web site. Savings account customers can register their Twitter account with a onetime password and link their account number. Customers can send up to Rs. 5,000 per transaction with a limit of Rs. 10,000 per day. The online NEFT charges will be applied. Both the recipient and sender need to have a Twitter account. This facility also enables customers to view their account balance, view the recent transactions and recharge mobile pre-paid through Twitter. "Mobile transactions account for 10 per cent of our total transactions, increased from 2 per cent in 2.5 years...We have about 2.8 million customers on mobile banking, while about 15 million Internet banking users," said Rajiv Sabharwal, Executive Director, ICICI Bank. ICICI Bank also plans to launch digital wallets ad digital wearables in the next few months.

9Jimjang Deru created national record in weightlifting in 56-kg category
Weightlifter Jimjang Deru of Arunachal Pradesh on 17 January 2015 created national record in weightlifting by lifting 238 kilograms under the 56 kilograms category. He created the record at the 10th Youth National Weightlifting Championship held in Yamuna Nagar, Haryana. He lifted 103 kilograms in snatch and 135 kilograms in Clean & Jerk to clinch the GOLD.Earlier in the first week of January 2015, he became the Asian Youth Champion in the 56-kg category at the Asian Weightlifting Championship in Doha, Qatar.

10. National Immunization Day for the year 2015 observed on 18 January
National Immunization Day for the year 2015 was observed on 18 January 2015. As a part of this, Children below 5 years of age were given polio drops as part of the government's drive to sustain polio eradication in India.Earlier on 17 January 2015, President Pranab Mukherjee launched the Pulse Polio Programme for the year 2015 by administering polio drops to children in New Delhi. Every year, India observes National Immunisation Day in January to mark the launch of pulse polio programme.  India has been implementing the Pulse Polio Programme since 1995. In India, the last case of wild polio was reported on 13 January 2011.

11.. Viktor Troicki won Men’s Single title of Sydney International Tennis Tournament
Viktor Troicki of Serbia on 18 January 2015 won Men’s Single title of Sydney International Tennis Tournament.  He won the title by defeating Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 6-2, 6-3 in the final.With this win, Troicki jumped to rank 54 from his current ranking of 92. His carrier best rank was 12. The Sydney win was the second ATP career title for Troicki.

12. Amaron bags brand award
Amaron, the flagship brand of Amara Raja Batteries Ltd, the second largest manufacturer of automotive batteries in the country with presence in 25 countries, has been awarded ‘Asia's Most Promising Brand’ for the year 2013-14 under Automotive Category by the World Consulting and Research Corporation (WCRC).The award applauds the brand for its innovation, customer satisfaction and brand image.
