1. Sri Lanka election: Rajapaksa concedes defeat
 Sri Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapaksa conceded defeat, said his official
 media unit on Friday, following clear signs of his opponent Maithripala Sirisena’s victory in the presidential elections. Mr. Sirisena polled 51.28 per cent of total votes, while Mr. Rajapaksa secured 47.58 per cent of the total votes polled.
Following what may be Sri Lanka’s watershed election, Mr. Rajapaksa vacated Temple Trees, his official residence in Colombo’s sea-facing Galle Road early Friday. He assured Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe of a smooth transition in an early morning meeting at the President’s home. “President had talks with the main opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and conveyed his wish to let the new President take over without any hindrance”, a statement from Mr. Rajapaksa’s office said.

2. India to provide 60 million dollar LoC to Guyana for road infrastructure project
Union Government will provide 60 million US dollars Line of Credit (LoC) to Guyana for its road infrastructure projects and passenger ferry service. The LoC will help the country in tackling its transport problem.
The decision of granting the LoC was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the bilateral talks with Guyana President Donald R. Ramotar on the sidelines of the 13th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas in Gandhinagar, Gujarat . Guyana President is the chief guest of Pravasi Bhartiya Divas.

3. Modibo Keita appointed as the Prime Minister of Mali

Modibo Keita was  appointed as the Prime Minister of West African nation Mali. His appointment was confirmed by Mali's President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.
Modibo Keita succeeded Moussa Mara who resigned on 8 January 2015 under pressure from the President due to the strife-torn condition of the nation.

4. Haryana Government appointed Yash Pal Singhal as Haryana DGP

Haryana Government appointed Yash Pal Singhal as Director General of Police (DGP).  His appointment was confirmed by the Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
He took over the post with immediate effects. He succeeded S N Vashisht who has been posted as Director General of State Vigilance Bureau.
Earlier, Singhal was working as Director General of Vigilance Bureau.
He is the IPS of 1983 batch. Singhal will have two-year tenure and he will retire in March 2017.

5. The Indian Parliament – A Critical Appraisal written by Sudha Pai and Avinash Kumar released
Book titled The Indian Parliament – A Critical Appraisal was released by Vice President Hamid Ansari on 8 January 2015. The book is authored by Prof. Sudha Pai and Avinash Kumar of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.

6. Former Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Rajkumar Manisana passed away

Retired Gauhati High Court Chief justice Rajkumar Manisana passed away  following a brief illness. He was 82.

7. Japanese automaker Honda pays $ 70 million fine to US after failing to report safety issues
Japanese automaker Honda has agreed to pay US 70 million dollars in fines to the US authorities for failing to report safety issues involving its cars.
It was announced by the US regulator National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) after Honda had accepted liability for the breach on safety issues.
As per NHTSA, Honda failed to report more than 1,700 death and injury claims involving its cars between July 2003 and June 2014.
In this regard, Honda will pay two $35 million fines, making it as the largest amount ever paid by any automaker.

8. PM Narendra Modi inaugurates Dandi Kutir museum in Gujarat
Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Dandi Kutir museum in Gujarat’s capital of Gandhinagar. It is a state-of-the-art three-storey museum, based upon the life and works of Mahatma Gandhi.
It was inaugurated on the occasion of the 13th Pravasi Bhartiya Divas (PBD) and 7th edition of Vibrant Gujarat.
Key facts about Dandi Kutir museum
It is the biggest permanent museum in the world based on life of one person- Mahatma Gandhi.
It traces the life and times of Mahatma Gandhi through various faces as barrister, his struggles in South Africa, return to India and successfully leading the freedom struggle.
Each and every aspect of Gandhi’s life is portrayed in the form of sculptures in the ‘salt-mound’ at Mahatma Mandir.
Dandi Kutir is located inside a 41-metre high salt-mound. This salt-mound depicts Gandhiji’s famous Dandi march of 1930 against the salt tax provisions imposed by the British regime.

9. Tech Mahindra to acquire Geneva's SOFGEN Holdings
 Tech Mahindra today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire SOFGEN Holdings (SOFGEN), a niche consulting and services company specialising in private /wealth, commercial and retail banking solutions. The transaction is expected to close by March 2015, subject to regulatory approvals.
SOFGEN has 450+ employees with 20+ Tier 1 client relationships. Delivering solutions "in and around" core banking, the company has the second largest pool of Avaloq consultants in the world and is Temenos' most prolific partner.
With this acquisition, Tech Mahindra will have the capability to offer a unique combination of "Change the Bank and Run the Bank" services to retail banking, private banking and wealth management customers globally.
"In the past decade, SOFGEN has grown to be a leading player in the niche market segments such as private, wealth, retail and commercial banking. 10. NASA’s Kepler Telescope achieves big milestone with 1,000th exoplanet discovery
NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope has achieved a big milestone after it had discovered 1000 exoplanet.
In order to achieve this milestone, planet hunting telescope had continuously monitored more than 150,000 stars beyond our solar system.
It has offered scientists an assortment of more than 4,000 candidate planets for further study and recently, 1,000 exoplanet was verified among these monitored stars.

11. Quikr launched instant messenger Quikr Nxt to enable seamless transaction
Online Classifieds Company Quikr on 7 January 2015 launched instant messenger Quikr Nxt to enable seamless transactions between its users. The product was launched by Quikr CEO and founder Pranay Chulet.
The messenger will allow users to chat using the website or mobile app. The messenger has been integrated into Quikr’s mobile app, mobile site and website.
The company claimed the new product is the world’s first instant messenger by a classifieds company.
With the Quikr Nxt, buyers/sellers do not need to share their contact number or e-mail address and the only point of reference is the Quikr ID. This prevents bombarding by multiple e-mails and phone calls and safeguards the user’s privacy.

12. India to provide 69 million rupees assistance to Nepal for goitre control
Indian Government on 8 January 2015 decided to provide 69 million rupees to Nepal as assistance to launch the Iodine Deficiency Disorder Control Programme (IDDCP) for goitre control across the country.
Indian Ambassador to Nepal Ranjit Rae handed over a cheque of 17.25 million rupees as an advance payment to the secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Supplies, Nepal for launching the programme.

13. AMCA: India’s own fifth generation fighter aircraft

AMCA: Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft
AMCA was in news in the first week of January 2015. It was revealed by the sources from Defence Ministry that the preliminary design stage of the futuristic fighter aircraft is over and the development work on the project is expected to start in 2015.
The main purpose of the AMCA is to replace the aging SEPECAT Jaguar & Dassault Mirage 2000.

• Single seat, twin engine with a diamond-shaped planform and an internal weapons bay
• High maneuverability which tends to include short-field capabilities

14. Hike Messenger acquired Zip phone to launch free voice calling
Chat application Hike messenger  acquired US-based free voice-calling company Zip Phone to launch free voice calling. However, the details of acquisition were not disclosed.
The acquisition is aimed at expanding product range of Hike Messenger in the internet-based communication space. Zip Phone’s technology will allow Hike to introduce free voice calling to the market much faster, which is one of the top requested features from the users.

• Zip Phone was founded in 2014 by Anuj Jain in the United States. The company has developed a voice calling app which works globally.
• The company was also part of the revered Y Combinator list Summer Batch (2014).
Hike Messenger
• Launched in December 2012 by Kavin Bharti Mittal, Hike Messenger has over 35 million users and has raised 86 million US dollars.
• Competing with the apps like WhatsApp, LINE and Viber, the app Hike has a user base with over 90 percent of its users being under the age of 25 and residing in India.
• The chat application has localised feature Hike Offline which lets you message your friends even when they are offline.

15. India to host World Bridge Championships 2015
India will host the 42nd World Bridge Championships that will be held in Chennai from 26 September 2015 to 10 October 2015. The information was announced by Bridge Federation of India (BFI) president N R Kirubakaramoorthy.
It is for the first time that World Bridge Championships are being held in Asia. This year, 660 players from 66 teams representing over 40 countries will take part in the 15-day long event
