1. BHEL commissioned 600 MW thermal unit at Dhabra in Chhattisgarh
State-owned power equipment-maker Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) commissioned a 600 MW thermal unit at Dhabra in Janjgir Champa District of Chhattisgarh for the Dainik Bhaskar Power Limited.
This is the second unit of 2 × 600 MW power project, commissioned by BHEL. The first 600 MW Unit was commissioned in 2014.
As per BHEL, its cumulative installed capacity now stands at 11400 MW in the state and its share of the total installed capacity in the state stands at 68 percent. BHEL has been a partner in the power development programme of the state of Chhattisgarh.
BHEL is an integrated power plant equipment manufacturer founded in 1964. In 2013 it was named a Maharatna Company. The current Chief Executive officer of the Company is B Prasada Rao.


2. Baba Ramdev to be accorded the status of Cabinet Minister by Haryana Government
The Yoga guru Baba Ramdev was in news as State Government of Haryana on 13 April 2015 decided to accord status equivalent to a Cabinet Minister on him.
The decision to grant status of Cabinet Minister to Ramdev was taken at a meeting of Ministers presided over by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. Ramdev will be honoured by the state government in Panchkula on 21 April 2015.
Besides, the state government also decided to develop herbal forest in the state under the supervision of Baba Ramdev. In these herbal forests, thousands of species of ayurvedic herbs would be grown.
Also, Yoga would be made a compulsory subject in Haryana’s schools for which yogshalas will be constructed in all the towns and about 6500 villages of the State under the guidance of Baba Ramdev.

3. Nobel laureate German Novelist Gunter Grass died

Nobel laureate German novelist Gunter Grass died on 13 April 2015 in Luebeck, Germany. He was 87.
He was a novelist, poet, playwright, illustrator, graphic artist, sculptor and recipient of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Literature. His writings mainly focused on the Nazi era, the horrors of the war and the destruction and guilt that remained after defeat of Germany.

4. Ri Su Yong, the Foreign Minister of North Korea, visited India
Ri Su Yong, the Foreign Minister of North Korea, visited India from 12 April to 14 April 2015. He was on a three-day visit to India and this was the first-ever visit of a foreign minister of North Korea to India.
He visited India on an invitation of Sushma Swaraj, the Minister of External Affairs of India.
During the visit, foreign minister level talks were held covering issues of mutual interest including India’s security concerns were discussed. In this regard, India informed Yong about the significance of peace and stability in the Korean peninsula for India’s Act East policy.
Yong appreciated India for its humanitarian assistance provided to North Korea and also sought additional assistance in this regard, which was agreed by India.
Apart from this, during the visit, Yong also met with the Vice President Hamid Ansari.

5. Modi, Kejriwal among 100 most influential people: Time
 Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal 
have been voted among the 100 most influential people in the world in an online poll by readers of Time magazine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin emerged the winner of this year’s Time 100 readers’ poll. He edged out rapper-singer CL (of the South Korean girl-group 2NE1) to claim the number one spot with 6.95 per cent of the votes in the final tally.
Pop stars Lady Gaga (2.6 per cent), Rihanna (1.9 per cent) and Taylor Swift (1.8 per cent) rounded out the top five.

6. Ramesh Abhishek given extension, to head FMC till merger with SEBI
 Ramesh Abhishek will continue to head the Forward Market Commission (FMC) till its merger with SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India). FMC is the regulator of commodity exchanges engaged in future trading.
“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the extension of the tenure of Ramesh Abhishek as Chairman, Forward Market Commission, for a period of three months beyond April 8 or till the merger of FMC with SEBI or until further orders, whatever is the earliest,” a notification issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said.
This is the fourth extension for Abhishek, who is a 1982 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Bihar cadre. He was appointed Chairman of the regulatory body on September 21, 2012, and his previous extension was given on January 8. All these extensions were for three months and his previous extension ended on April 8.
He has been given extension at a time when work on the merger with FMC is in full swing. A committee under the Chairmanship of Additional Secretary in the Finance Ministry, Ajay Tyagi, has been constituted for implementation of the merger process. The merger will be completed with enactment of the Finance Bill.
In his Budget speech this year, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley proposed the merger of the FMC with SEBI to strengthen the regulation of commodity forward markets and reduce wild speculation. The merger has some logic as forward trading in commodities is also one of the capital market activities and a kind of financial transaction.

7. World Bank: India tops in remittances, receives $70 bn
 The World Bank has said India continues to be the leading nation in remittances pulling in USD 70 billion from its global migrant workforce in 2014.
World Bank’s study of remittance, the money workers and professionals working in foreign lands send back to their native countries, attributed this mainly to weak economic growth in Europe, deterioration of the Russian economy and the depreciation of the euro and rouble.
Remittances to the developing world are expected to reach $ 440 billion in 2015, an increase of 0.9 per cent over the previous year. Global remittances, including those to high income countries, are projected to grow by 0.4 per cent to $ 586 billion.
United States, Saudi Arabia, Germany, Russia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) remained the top five migrant destination countries and apart from India, China, Philippines, Mexico and Nigeria are the top five remittance recipient countries, in terms of value of remittances, the report said.
“Total remittances in 2014 reached $ 583 billion. This is more than double the ODA in the world. India received $ 70 billion, China $ 64 billion, the Philippines $ 28 billion. With new thinking these mega flows can be leveraged to finance development and infrastructure projects,” said Kaushik Basu, World Bank Chief Economist and Senior Vice President.

8. Flipkart pulls out of talks with Airtel on Zero platform
Flipkart has decided to pull out of an ongoing discussion with Airtel to join the Airtel Zero platform. The move follows criticism that the deal would violate the principles of net neutrality.
In a statement Flipkart said it strongly believed in the concept of net neutrality. "We exist because of the Internet. Over the past few days there has been a great amount of debate, both internally and externally, on the topic of zero rating, and we have a deeper understanding of the implications," the e-commerce company said.
Bharti Airtel recently launched a new platform that will enable users to get access to applications and services with zero data charges. Called ‘Airtel Zero’, the platform will allow users to access chat apps, e-commerce sites, gaming portals, and other Internet-based services without having to pay for the data usage. Under the new model, Airtel will collect the data charges from the app service providers.

9. NCTI inks MoU with Paytm to promote Indian MSMEs
Mobile commerce platform Paytm on 13 March 2015 inked memorandum of understanding MoU with National Centre for Trade Information (NCTI) to promote Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). As per MoU, Paytm will offer a virtual marketplace platform for NCTI members and will extend its services and enable them to sell online. In this regard, Paytm will set up payment gateways platform for online ticketing and membership fees for NCTI. This tie-up will play a pivotal role in the growth of MSMEs by providing them with value-added trade information generally for the trading community. It will also provide platform to NCTI members that will serve as an opportunity to trade online and scale faster.
