1. Nasim Zaidi takes over as new CEC
Nasim Zaidi, on Sunday, assumed charge as the 20th Chief Election Commissioner succeeding H.S. Bramha who retired on Saturday after completing his term.
After assuming charge Mr. Zaidi said: “I feel privileged and honoured that I have been given this responsibility to lead one of the finest institutions that the Indian Constitution has provided. I am conscious of the onerous task in hand.”
“Election Commission of India will formulate a strategic plan for efficient election management based on principles of independence, transparency, professionalism, inclusiveness and measurable outputs,” he told the media.
Mr. Zaidi further stated that he would like the Election Commission to become a more vibrant and transparent organisation, which is open to receiving new ideas and best practices.

2. Yechury elected new CPI(M) general secretary
 Rajya Sabha member Sitaram Yechury on Sunday was elected as the next general secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist).
Mr. Yechury is the fifth general secretary of the 50-year-old party.
The party’s new Central Committee has 91 members besides five special invitees and five permanent invitees.
Veteran leaders V.S. Achuthanandan, Buddhadeb Bhattacharya and Nirupam Sen were dropped from the Central Committee.

3. LIC buys Rs 300 crore Infosys shares in Q4
State-owned life insurer LIC has shored up its stake in Infosys to 4.81 per cent, purchasing shares worth over Rs 300 crore in the January-March quarter.
This is the fourth consecutive quarter of share purchase by LIC in the software services firm.
LIC held 4.69 per cent stake in Infosys during the October-December quarter and increased that to 4.81 per cent as of March 31, 2015, as per latest data available with the stock exchanges.
Taking into account the current market value of Infosys shares, the 0.12 percentage point hike in LIC’s holding in the company would be worth about Rs 317 crore. Infosys shares closed at Rs 2,182 on Friday.

4. Alto is best-selling car for tenth year in a row
 Maruti Suzuki India continued its hold on the country’s car market in 2014-15 with its models Alto, Swift, Dzire and WagonR retaining the top four positions.
According to a data by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Maruti’s Alto sold 2,64,492 units in 2014-15 as against 2,58,281 units in the previous fiscal, retaining its numero uno position for the tenth year in succession.
Likewise, Swift retained the second spot with 2,01,338 units in fiscal 2015 as compared to 1,98,571 units in the previous fiscal.
Keeping its third position intact was Maruti’s Dzire, which sold 1,92,010 units in 2014-15 as against 1,87,673 units.
WagonR also retained the fourth best-selling car brand status with 1,61,250 units in year 2014-15 as against 1,56,369 units in the previous fiscal.
Hyundai Motor India’s Grand i10 jumped to the fifth spot in 2014-15 at 99,088 units from 7th in the previous fiscal at 72,789 units.
However, the company’s Eon dropped to the 6th position at 78,334 units in 2014-15 from 5th spot in the previous fiscal at 86,474 units.
Hyundai’s Elite i20 was the 7th best-selling car brand in India in year 2014-15 with 77,747 units, while Honda City was at eighth position clocking 77,343 units.
Maruti’s Celerio was ninth best-selling car at 68,143 units sold, while Honda’s Amaze was 10th with 66,703 units


5. SC appoints CBI SP Vivek Priyadarshi as head of team probing IPL scandal
 Supreme Court has appointed Vivek Priyadarshi to head an investigating team to further probe the Indian Premier League (IPL) season 6 spot-fixing and betting scandals.  Decision in this regard was taken by a SC bench comprising Justices T S Thakur and F M I Kalifulla. The bench took this decision on the recommendation of a three member panel headed by former Chief Justice of India (CJI) RM Lodha which was appointed in January 2015.

6. International Paralympic Committee derecognises Paralympic Committee of India
 The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has suspended the Paralympic 
Committee of India (PCI) for indefinite period.  IPC’s this move comes after PCI had provided shoddy treatment to athletes during the National Para-Athletics Championships held in Ghaziabad from March 20 to 22, 2015.  This is second time PCI has been suspended by PCI. With this suspension, Indian para-athletes will not be able to participate in any IPC-sanctioned competition, including 2016 Paralympic Games at Rio de Janeiro. In this regard, Union Sports Ministry also has issued a show cause notice to PCI.
