1. Saina Nehwal officially crowned World no. 1 women shuttler
Indian ace Saina Nehwal’s ascent to the top of women’s badminton was officially confirmed today with the release of the latest rankings by the game’s international governing body.
In becoming the first Indian woman shuttler to attain the number one spot in world rankings, Saina took over the reins from China’s Li Xuerui, who slipped to third with Spain’s Carolina Marin
claiming the second position.Saina, who had clinched the India Open Super Series title on March 29, was already assured of the top spot after her closest challenger for the position, Carolina, lost in the semi-finals.
Saina thus becomes only the second Indian overall to be world number one after Prakash Padukone had the distinction of being the numero uno men’s badminton player.Rising women’s shuttler PV Sindhu held her ninth position.

2. Harvard University set to open international office in Mumbai
The US’ prestigious Harvard University is set to open its international offices in India, China and South Africa to facilitate research and academic work for its affiliates in those regions.
Harvard is awaiting approval from the Indian government for its School of Public Health to open an office in Mumbai, a report in the college newspaper The Harvard Crimson said.
Apart from Mumbai, Harvard has authorised the formation of new international offices in Cape Town and Beijing and each office is in a different stage of development, Vice Provost for International Affairs Jorge I Dominguez was quoted as saying.The Center for African Studies is expected to open an office in Cape Town by the end of 2015 or early 2016 and an expected office in Beijing would be connected to the existing Harvard Center Shanghai.

3. Indian-origin nurse Subadhra Devi Rai named for 2015 International Achievement Award
Dr Subadhra Devi Rai, an Indian-origin Singaporean nurse,  was named for the 2015 International Achievement Award by the Florence Nightingale International Foundation (FNIF) of the International Council of Nurses.She was named for the award for her work in the healthcare sector of women and refugees and will receive the award on 21 June 2015 at a conference in Seoul.
With this 51-year-old Rai became the first Singaporean to get the prestigious biennial prize since its introduction in 1999.
At present, she is a senior lecturer at the School of Health Sciences (Nursing) at Nanyang Polytechnic in Singapore.

4. Sunita Tomar, the face of India's anti-tobacco campaign, died
Sunita Tomar, the face of India’s anti-tobacco campaign, died  at her native village in Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh. She was 28.  In 2014, she shot a 30-second video titled Sunita highlighting the devastating effect of smokeless tobacco. In the video she shared her experience, which later was used by the government for its anti-tobacco drive to warn people against consumption of smokeless gutkha and pan masalas.

5. Justice Sunil Kumar Sinha appointed as Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court
Justice Sunil Kumar Sinha  was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court (HC). He was appointed by the President Pranab Mukherjee in accordance with the Article 217 (1) of the Constitution of India. He assumed the charge of the office of Chief Justice of Sikkim HC on the date he was appointed.
Before this appointment he was serving as the acting Chief Justice of the Sikkim HC since October 2014. He became a Judge in the Sikkim HC in July 2014.
As per the provisions of the Article 217 (1) of the constitution of India, the president of India appoints chief justice of a high court after consultation with the Chief Justice of India and the Governor of the State and he will be in the office till he attains 62 years.

6. Andhra Pradesh Cabinet approved Amaravathi as capital of the State
Andhra Pradesh Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu approved that Amaravathi will be the new capital city of the state. The capital will come up at Tullur in Vijayawada-Guntur region of the state. The name of Amaravathi as state capital was finalised in view of its historical, spiritual and mythological significance.
About Amaravathi
• Amaravathi, located on the banks of river Krishna, derives its name from Lord Amareswara temple in the village and it is known as Dakshina Kashi (Kashi of the South).
• It was the ancient seat of power of the Satavahanas for 400 years who ruled the country way back in 230 BCE.
• It also means the City of Gods (in Sanskrit, it literally means the Abode of Immortals) and as per Puranas, the city was ruled by Lord Indra
• It is a place, where not only Saivism and Vaishnavism developed but also Buddhism and Jainism flourished here
• It is one of the 12 heritage cities of the country which was chosen by the Union Government for development

7. Renowned Hindi poet Kailash Vajpeyi died
Renowned Hindi poet Kailash Vajpeyi died  due to cardiac arrest in a private hospital of Saket in New Delhi. He was 79. He is survived by his wife and daughter Ananya Vajpeyi. Kailash Vajpeyi was born in 1936 at Hamirpur of Uttar Pradesh and began his career as a journalist and subsequently started teaching at Delhi University.He published 28 books, including 14 volumes of poetry. Some of his works includes Sufinama, Sankrant, Dehant se Hatkar (Away from Death), Teesra Andhera (Third Darkness), Prthvi ka krshnapaksha, Rajdhani and Bhavishya Ghat Raha Hai (The future is shrinking).

8. General Muhammadu Buhari won Presidential Election of Nigeria
General Muhammadu Buhari won the Presidential Election of Nigeria. Election commission of Nigeria declared the result .  Muhammadu Buhari defeated Goodluck Jonathan.His party All Progressives Congress (APC) secured 15424921 votes and Goodluck Jonathan's People's Democratic Party (PDP) secured 12853162 votes.
He defeated Goodluck Jonathan by more than 2.5 million votes. General Muhammadu Buhari is a former military ruler.
It is the fourth time that General Buhari has sought the presidency.  He ruled Nigeria from January 1984 until August 1985, taking charge after a military coup in December 1983.
He became the first opposition candidate to win a presidential election in Nigeria.
Nigeria is the most populous country of Africa, has its largest economy and is its leading oil producer.

9. Union Government launched FAME-India scheme to boost electric, hybrid vehicle sales
Union Government  launched Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles (FAME) – India Scheme.The scheme was launched with an aim to boost sales of eco-friendly vehicles in the country. It is a part of the National Mission for Electric Mobility.
The scheme envisages providing 795 crore rupees support till 2020 for the manufacturing and sale of electric and hybrid vehicles.
Characteristic Features of FAME – India Scheme
It envisages providing demand incentives to electric and hybrid vehicles from two wheelers to buses in range of 1800 rupees to 66 lakh rupees
Focus areas of the scheme will be technology development; demand creation; pilot projects; and charging infrastructure
Depending on technology, battery operated scooters and motorcycles will be eligible demand incentives ranging between 1800 rupees to 29000 rupees
In three-wheeler the incentives will range from 3300 rupees and 61000 rupees
In four-wheeler segment incentive ranges from 13000 rupees and 1.38 lakh rupees
In case of Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) incentive ranges from 17000 rupees to 1.87 lakh rupees
In case of buses the incentive ranges from 34 lakh rupees to 66 lakh rupees
The Department of Heavy Industries will be nodal department for the scheme.
Implementation of the Scheme
The scheme will be implemented in phases with fund allocations of 260 crore rupees and 535 crore rupees for the first two years respectively. The funds will be spent on technology platform (including testing infrastructure) demand incentives, charging infrastructure, pilot projects and operations.
In the first phase, the scheme will be implemented over a two year period between 2015-16 and 2016-17. The government will review the implementation of the scheme in first phase after 31 March 2017.
The future allocation will depend on the outcome and experience gained during the period.
National Electric Mobility Mission Plan
Union Government launched the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) 2020 in 2013. NEMMP aims to achieve national fuel security by promoting hybrid and electric vehicles in the country. There is an ambitious target to achieve 6-7 million sales of hybrid and electric vehicles year on year from 2020 onwards.
Government aims to provide fiscal and monetary incentives to kick start this nascent technology. With the support from the Government, the cumulative sale is expected to reach 15-16 Million by 2020.

10. Mumbai to host global homoeo meet
India is going to host a global homoeopathy meet this month. Practicing homoeopaths, researchers and scientists from basic streams of physics and chemistry would attend the two-day meet beginning April 11 in Mumbai.“We are going to discuss latest developments in the medical stream. We are expecting scientific papers and speakers from over nine countries, including Cuba, Brazil the United States and the UK,” Praveen Kumar, Head of Department of Practice of Medicine at JSPS College, said.Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, he said the organisers have invited the Australian researchers (who had recently questioned the efficacy of homoeopathy) for the meeting. “We have asked them to come and take part in the deliberations to understand the homoeopathic science,” he said
