1. BRICS bank to start lending in local currency by April: Kamath

The New Development Bank (NDB), set up by five BRICS nations including 
India, will start lending in local currency by April next year and member countries will primarily be the focus of credit facility, its chief and eminent banker K V Kamath said here today.
He said a decision to open membership for other countries will be taken in the next few months by the bank’s Board of Governors.

BRICS countries had decided last year to establish the Bank with India getting the right to nominate the first President.


2. India, Pakistan get SCO membership
Russian President Vladimir Putin said India and Pakistan will join the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, a group dominated by Russia and China and also including former Soviet republics in Central Asia.
Russia sees the organisation as a counterweight to Western alliances.
Membership in the group potentially offers India greater access to the energy resources of Central Asia. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had combined his attendance at the summit in Russia with visits to SCO members Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Mr. Putin opened the annual summit on Friday by announcing the acceptance of India and Pakistan as members. He said Belarus would obtain observer status, joining Afghanistan, Iran and Mongolia.
The Russian President called for greater cooperation in fighting drug trafficking from Afghanistan and the financing of terrorism.

3.BHEL commissions second 500 MW unit at Tuticorin power station
Power generation equipment manufacturer Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has commissioned a second 500 MW unit at the Tuticorin Thermal Power Station (TPS) in Tamil Nadu. The first unit was commissioned on March 10.
Tuticorin TPS has been set up by NLC Tamil Nadu Power Ltd (NTPL), a joint venture of Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) and Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO). The project is situated near Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) port, on the shores of the Bay of Bengal. Earlier stages of the Tuticorin TPS comprised five units of 210 MW, all installed by BHEL in three phases between 1979 and 1992.
Recently, the capital goods major commissioned a second unit of NLC’s 250 MW circulating fluidised bed combustion (CFBC) based power plant in Neyveli. The other project being executed by the company for NLC is the 2x500 MW pulverised lignite fired thermal power plant, also coming up at Neyveli.
Notably, BHEL commissioned 8,230 MW in the power sector utility segment during the financial year 2014-15, surpassing by 19 per cent the Government’s capacity addition target of 6,914 MW set for it. In all, BHEL commissioned and synchronised 11,941 MW in the domestic and international markets in the last fiscal besides making a major contribution to another 1,600 MW by commissioning two boilers of 800 MW each.
Significantly, BHEL’s installed capacity has crossed 155 GW, including 132 GW of domestic utility sets. The company has joined the elite club of international manufacturers to have supplied power generating equipment of more than 150 GW.

4. Renowned Urdu poet Bashar Navaaz passed away
Noted Urdu poet and critic Bashar Navaaz passed away following a brief illness in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. He was 80. He was known as an Indo Pak shayar as his poetry is popular in India as well as in Pakistan.
Born on 18 August 1935 at Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Navaaz was famous for his writings that were regularly published in various Urdu literary journals magazines in India and abroad. His books Rayagan, Ajanabee samandar were very popular among gazal lovers.

5. Infosys signed Multi-Million Euro Deal with Deutsche Bank
India’s second largest IT services firm Infosys on 8 July 2015 signed a multi-million euro deal with Deutsche Bank. As per this agreement, Infosys will provide services like application maintenance, package implementation and testing services across the Deutsche Bank Group.
Moreover, Infosys will also be a strategic partner under Deutsche Bank’s Supplier Partnership Programme, which was launched in June 2014 to concentrate on the most strategic vendors based on business impact across all categories of the bank.

6. Kolkata-based Bandhan Bank appointed its Chairman, Boards of Directors
Bandhan Bank Ltd on 9 July 2015 appointed its Chairman and Board of Directors. The bank will commence its operations in India from 23 August 2015. It will be the first bank to be established in Eastern India post Independence.
Ashok Kumar Lahiri, former Chief Economic Adviser to the Union Government, was appointed as the Chairman of the bank. While, Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, Founder of Bandhan Financial Services Ltd, was appointed as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the bank. They both will be in the board of directors as well.

7. Uttarakhand gets India’s first earthquake early warning system
Uttarakhand became first Indian state to install a system to detect earthquakes and disseminate warnings. The first system has been installed in its capital Dehradun which will issue warnings 1-40 seconds before earthquakes of magnitude 5 or more occur. The system is designed and manufactured by Italian firm, Space Dynamics which already has installed it in Japan, Italy and US.

8. Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka sets record for spending longest time in space
Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka has set a Guinness World Record for spending longest time in space with a total of 804 days as on July 2015. With this he broke the previous record of 803 days, nine hours and 41 minutes set by Russian cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev (now retired) across six missions from 1998 to 2005.

9. Bharat Electronics-made Akash inducted into Indian Air Force
Defence PSU Bharat Electronics made Akash inducted into Indian Air Force.
BEL, the nodal agency and supplies major sub-systems, today at a ceremony held at Air Force Station, Gwalior, handed over the missile system.
Akash is a great success story of the ‘Make in India’ initiative and Bharat Electronics Limited is proud to be a part of it. Barring a few electronic components, every bit of Akash has the ‘Made in India' tag. Almost 92 per cent of the total cost of inputs is sourced within India.
The induction of Akash into the Indian Air Force was marked by the symbolic handing over of the ‘key’ of the weapon system by S K Sharma, Chairman and Managing Director, BEL, to the Defence Minister, Manohar Parrikar, who in turn handed over the key to Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, Chief of the Air Staff.
