1. Modi to be conferred with honorary doctorate degree by US varsity
 In a move that will further enhance the image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the international community, the Southern University System of Louisiana in United States has decided to confer an honorary doctorate degree for his work in the field of inclusive growth.
The announcement could add a new dimension to the India-US relationship especially in the context of Modi’s imminent visit to the Washington and other US cities.

2. At WTO, more countries push India to sign trade facilitation pact

 India is under attack at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) for delaying its support to a pact on trade facilitation with 18 members objecting to its stance in a meeting in Geneva on Tuesday, and some even demanding that the agreement be signed within the next few days.
New Delhi, however, was unwilling to relent and reiterated that adoption of the trade facilitation text should be postponed until the end of the year till when a permanent solution on public stockholding should also be agreed.
“As many as 18 members including Japan, the US, Paraguay, the EU, Norway, New Zealand, Thailand, Pakistan, Mexico and Peru objected to the trade facilitation text being held up despite an agreement in Bali to adopt it by July 31 this year,” a person who attended the informal meeting of the WTO’s agriculture committee

 A team of ISRO scientists on Thursday presented the first pictures of the red planet sent by India’s Mars Orbiter Mission spacecraft to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The team, led by ISRO chairman K. Radhakrishnan and ISRO scientific secretary V. Koteswara Rao, flew to New Delhi to hand over the pictures to Mr. Modi.

The Indian shooting team comprising Shagun Chowdhary, Shreyasi Singh and Varsha Varman bagged a bronze in women’s double trap event but Gurpreet Singh narrowly missed out on a medal in his event at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon on Thursday.
The Indian women’s team aggregated 279 to finish on the podium behind China and hosts South Korea at the Gyeonggido Shooting Range.

Launching his government's ambitious project to make India a manufacturing hub, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday promised effective and easy governance to help achieve high growth and creation of jobs.
Kicking off the "Make in India" campaign, Modi said his government's focus will be on physical infrastructure creation as well as creating a digital network for making India a hub for global manufacturing of goods ranging from cars to softwares, satellites to submarines and paper to power.

6. Visa to establish technology centre in India
Visa, the global payments technology company, has said it will establish a technology centre in India next year, joining a host of global financial system players who have established technology centres in the country to take advantage of its software and engineering talent. Sources said the centre will be in Bangalore.
Visa said it will hire 2,000 technologists globally, including conversion of contractor positions to full time positions within the company. The company did not say how many of these will be in India, but sources said the majority would likely be here.
Citibank, HSBC, Stanchart, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs and Fidelity are among those who already have technology and back office support centres in India.

7. MasterCard aims to replace cash with e-payments
 Financial service provider MasterCard is focused on finding new ways to replace cash with electronic ways of paying using innovation, the company’s CEO has said.
MasterCard is “focused on finding ways for people to interact in simple, smart ways with the ecosystem to be able to replace cash with electronic ways of paying,” said Ajay Banga, MasterCard president and CEO.
Addressing the MasterCard Innovation Forum in Singapore, Mr. Banga highlighted innovations, pointing out the use of biometrics and facial recognition for safety and security.
The innovations included the biometrics and cards for financial inclusion for underserved people in places such as South Africa and India to use for the World Food Programme compensating people to convert from physical food to digital food.

8. Kapil Dev wins Lifetime Achievement award in UK
 Indian cricket legend Kapil Dev has been honoured with a Lifetime Achievement award at a ceremony in the House of Lords in London.
The award, constituted by the Indo-European Business Forum (IEBF), was presented to the former India World Cup-winning captain on Wednesday evening for his contribution to the sport and for his work in the field of upliftment of poor and destitute communities through the Khushii society.
“I am very proud to be Indian. Today India is ready to do business with anybody in the world,” Dev said in his acceptance speech.
