1. Dhoni retires from Test cricket
 Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Tuesday retired from Test cricket
with immediate effect, citing strain of playing all formats, after his team lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia.
“One of India’s greatest Test Captains under whose leadership India became the No. 1 team in the Test Rankings M.S. Dhoni, has decided to retire from Test Cricket citing the strain of playing all formats of Cricket,” the BCCI said in a statement.
“M.S. Dhoni has chosen to retire from Test Cricket with immediate effect in order to concentrate on ODI and T20 formats. BCCI while respecting the decision of M S Dhoni to retire from Test Cricket, wishes to thank him for his enormous contribution to Test Cricket and the laurels that he has brought to India,” it added.
India, trailing 0-2 in the four-match series after today’s draw, would be led by Virat Kohli in the fourth and final match in Sydney.
“Virat Kohli will be the captain of the Indian Team for the Fourth and Final Test against Australia to be played in Sydney from the 6th of January 2015,” the BCCI stated.
The 33-year-old, who led India to an unprecedented two World Cup titles (2007 Twenty20 World Championships and the 2011 ODI World Cup), had been drawing flak for India’s poor run in overseas Tests.


2. Sanjiv Sarin appointed as CEO and MD of Tata Coffee Limited
Sanjiv Sarin was  appointed as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Tata Coffee Limited with effect from 8 January 2015.
His appointed was approved by the Board of Directors of Tata Coffee Ltd. Sanjiv Sarin will succeed Hameed Huq, who will retire on 31 March 2015.
Sarin is currently the Regional President for South Asia in Tata Global Beverages Ltd, the holding company of Tata Coffee Ltd.

3. Access to Gmail blocked in China
Access to Google Inc’s Gmail was blocked in China  after months of disruptions. The access to the Gmail was supposedly blocked by Great Firewall of China which is the world's most sophisticated internet censorship mechanism.
As part of it, large numbers of Gmail Web addresses were cut off in China from 26 December 2014 and the service was still down on 29 December 2014.
The update was confirmed by GreatFire.org, a China-based freedom of speech advocacy group. Also, Google's own real-time traffic to Google services displayed a sharp drop-off in traffic to Gmail from China.

4. ADB to provide $75-mn loan for Karnataka urban water management programme
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide $75-million loan and $1.8-million grant to help improve water resource management in three towns of Karnataka in the Upper Tunghabadra sub-bhasin.
The loan from the ADB's ordinary capital resources has a 25-year term, including a grace period of five years.
The first tranche of the loan under the Karnataka Integrated Urban Water Management Investment Programme will help expand urban water supply and sanitation infrastructure, improve water resource planning, monitoring and service delivery, and strengthen operational and administrative capacity in the three towns of Byadagi, Davanagere and Harihar. 

5. Australia regain Border-Gavaskar Trophy after drawn Test
 Australia today regained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after the third cricket Test ended in an exciting draw with a jittery India just about managing to avoid an embarrassing defeat here.
Set an improbable target of 384 in 70 overs courtesy Shaun Marsh’s 99, India’s batting frailty was again exposed and they survived some anxious moments before salvaging a draw. It ensured that India won’t suffer a ‘whitewash’ this time around.
India finished at a nervous 174 for six before both the captains decided call off play with four overs remaining, bringing an end to a gripping Test match.
Australia needed a draw to regain the coveted trophy and batted out the first session to shut the door on India’s chances of a possible victory. With this draw, Australia maintained their unassailable 2-0 lead in the four-match series.
The fifth day’s play expectedly turned out to be an intriguing contest between bat and ball and had Australians given themselves some more time, they could have even pulled off a victory at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
When play was called off after 66 overs, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (24 no) and Ravichandran Ashwin (8 no) survived 11 tense overs to bring closure.
The highlight of the Indian innings was an 85-run fourth wicket stand between Virat Kohli (54) and Ajinkya Rahane (48) after three quick wickets saw them reeling at 19 for three at one stage.

6. AirAsia jet crash: Indonesian search and rescue teams retrieve 40 bodies from sea
Indonesian search and rescue teams retrieve 40 bodies from sea from missing AirAsia plane, the Navy said.
Debris sighted in Indonesia's Java Sea is from the AirAsia jet presumed to have crashed two days ago, Tatang Zaenudin, an official at the country's search and rescue agency, told Reuters on Tuesday.
Indonesian rescuers saw bodies and luggage off the coast of Borneo island on Tuesday and officials said they were "95 per cent sure" debris spotted in the sea was from a missing AirAsia plane with 162 people on board.
Indonesia AirAsia's Flight QZ8501, an Airbus A320-200, lost contact with air traffic control early on Sunday during bad weather on a flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore.
Pictures of floating bodies were broadcast on television and relatives of the missing gathered at the crisis centre in Surabaya were shown weeping, their heads in their hands.

7. Tamu Lhochhar festival being observed in Nepal on 30th December
Tamu Lhochhar festival is being observed on 30th December with gaiety and full fervor in Nepal which marks new year among different communities.
It is the biggest cultural festival of the Mahayana sect of Buddhism and generally being observed by the Gurungs at different places in Nepal including in the Kathmandu Valley.
The people of Tamang, Sherpa, Gurung, Magar, Thakali, Jirel, Nesyangwa, Bhote, Dura and Lepcha communities and others celebrates this festival.

8. RBI released Financial Stability Report December 2014
The Reserve Bank of India  released the Financial Stability Report December 2014. The report also includes the Trend and Progress of Banking in India during 2013-14.

9. Eminent educationist Saiyid Hamid died
Noted educationist and former Vice Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University Saiyid Hamid died  following a prolonged illness. He was 94.

10. RBI liberalised norms for Overseas Direct Investment by Indian companies
Reserve Bank of India (RBI)  liberalised norms for Indian companies investing abroad. The liberalization of norms was part of series of amendment done by RBI from time to time in the Foreign Exchange Management (Transfer or Issue of any Foreign Security) (Amendment) Regulations, 2004.
