1. Japan to host 2026 Asian Games

1. Japan’s Aichi prefecture and its capital city Nagoya were confirmed as co-hosts of the 2026 Asian Games today, adding yet another major event to the country’s bulging international sports calendar.
2. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) formally endorsed the bid after Aichi Prefecture governor Hideaki Ohumra and Nagoya city mayor Takashi Kawamura presented their joint offering to the OCA General Assembly in Danang, which is currently hosting the fifth Asian Beach Games.
3. The OCA had originally planned to choose the 2026 Asian Games host in 2018 but brought the vote forward to provide some stability to the region’s crammed sporting calendar which includes three Olympic events over the next eight years.
4. South Korea is already hosting the Winter Olympics at Pyeonchang in 2018, while Tokyo hosts the 2020 Summer Olympics before the winter games go to Beijing in 2022.
5. Held every four years, the 2018 Asian Games have already been awarded to the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang while the 2022 edition will be held in the Chinese city of Hangzhou.
6. Tokyo is also hosting the next Olympic games in 2020 while Japan will stage the Rugby World Cup in 2019, the Asian Winter Games in 2017 and the world swimming championships in 2021.

1. India and Russia joint military exercise Indra 2016 begins

1. The eighth edition of joint military exercise ‘Indra-2016’ between India and Russia has begun in Russian city of Vladivostok. The main focus of this edition of bilateral military exercise is on Counter-Terrorism Operations in semi mountainous and jungle terrain under United Nations Mandate.
2. The eleven days bilateral military exercise seeks to achieve interoperability in joint operations. Troops from both sides would acquaint themselves with the respective approach to such counter-Terrorism operations.

1. India, US, Afghanistan reaffirm shared interest in combating terrorism
1. India, United States and Afghanistan have reaffirmed their shared interests in combating terrorism and advancing peace and security in the region. In this regard, a trilateral statement was issued after meeting of their delegates in New York on the sidelines of the 71st session of UN General Assembly.
2. Three countries reaffirm their shared interests in advancing peace and security in the region, as well as countering terrorism. They have exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan and on regional issues of mutual interest.

1. Cabinet approves merger of Union, Railway Budgets
1. In a complete overhaul of the Central Government’s Budgetary process, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved three crucial proposals --- to merge the Railway and General Budgets, scrap the distinction between the Plan and Non-Plan Expenditure and advance the date for the presentation of the General Budget to ensure it is completed by March 31.
2. Jaitley also said that the Cabinet had taken an in-principle decision to advance the Budgetary process but the exact dates for presentation of the Budget will be taken based on the calendar for State assembly elections.
3. Regarding the merger of the Railway and General Budget, the Finance Minister said that the distinct identity of the Railways and its functional autonomy will continue.
